"Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect." -- Mark Twain
Jan was born in the small town of Sabetha, Kansas. Her father was the only lawyer in town (not that much litigation in those days). When Jan was about 8 years old, the family moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, where she attended elementary and middle school. They finally settled in Amarillo, Texas, where she attended Tascosa High School.
After graduation from high school, Jan matriculated to Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University). She earned her baccalaureate degree in 1968 and went on to join the first Master’s Degree of Social Work class at the University of Texas at Austin. She received her Master’s in Social Work in 1972.
Jan was married for ten years, during which time she held various jobs and lived in various locations, including overseas. She has no children, but currently has three cats and frequent visits from the neighborhood raccoons and possums.
With her father’s reluctance (he did not favor lady lawyers), Jan entered the University of Houston Law School as a night school student so she could hold a full time job during the day. She passed the bar in 1986 and was licensed to practice law in May of 1987. After passing the bar, she worked briefly for Shell Oil in Houston but, wanting to go back to her small town roots, accepted a job with Gulf Coast Legal Foundation in Bellville, Texas, in 1988. Gulf Coast Legal Foundation was a non-profit private corporation providing free civil legal services to the poor.
Jan worked for Gulf Coast Legal Foundation, (later Lone Star Legal Aid), for twenty-four years. The Bellville office was closed in 2010 and she accepted John and Jerry's offer to rent space in their building and hang out her own shingle as a solo law practitioner.
Since moving to Bellville, Jan has been a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, where she is currently a member in the Altar Guild. In the past, she has taught Sunday School and has served on the Vestry and as a member of the St. Mary’s Day School Board.
Jan no longer actively practices law, as befits a person of her years. She has limited her practice and is available by phone to consult in the areas of child protection law, elder law, probate and wills, and landlord/tenant law.
